Acclaimed musicians recount sea battles, intrigue, scandal and murder

‘The Adventures of John Paul Jones' is a unique new folk album from  Alan Reid and Rob
van Sante
that catalogues the life of this fascinating Scottish born sailor who achieved
fame and notoriety during the American War of Independence.

“Alan's voice and words form a powerful mesh…….Rob reveals himself as a
virtuoso singer and guitarist”

Alan immersed himself in Jones' story and has composed a whole album of songs and tunes
written in folk styles of the different countries associated with the seafarer - and accompanied
by Rob's first class musical, recording and engineering skills. The duo are complemented on
the album by a bunch of talented musicians; Wendy Weatherby and John Martin from Scotland,
Ian Fairbairn and Mark Chillington from England, John Herrmann from North Carolina and
brothers Eric and Nico Hueber from Mulhouse in France.

The album will be premiered at two special events for the Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival
(3rd & 4th June)  http://www.dgartsfestival.org.uk . The performances will feature guest musicians
Colin Train on accordion and keyboard and Laurie Crump on whistle, fiddle and recorder.
Actress Janis Marshall (of Unscene Productions) will read and act (in the form of radio theatre),
adopting a range of female characters, including an old crone (à la MacBeth witch) who speaks
in rhyme and comments on the action. Ordinary concerts these definitely are not.

Fairport Convention celebrates forty-fifth
anniversary in Glasgow
Folkrock legends Fairport Convention will be celebrating their forty-fifth anniversary in Glasgow when the band visits The Ferry on Thursday 10 May.

Formed in 1967's 'summer of love', Fairport Convention has been delighting audiences for 45 years making them one of the most enduring bands to emerge from the fertile 60s music scene. Hailed as the originators of British folk-rock music, the band is still as vibrant and inventive as ever.

The 2012 anniversary tour will feature songs from the band's recent studio album, the critically-acclaimed Festival Bell . However, with such a long history  the band has a vast repertoire to draw on so this year the tour concerts will also include a selection of favourite songs and tunes specially chosen in a poll of the band's fans.

"Forty-five years is a milestone," says Simon Nicol who co-founded the band in 1967, "but we don't intend to rest on our laurels or hark back to the past – Fairport is a band that always looks to the future. All five of us are looking forward to getting back on the road – in fact, we're raring to go – because our first love is live performance."

"We've played in Glasgow before but we always enjoy coming back here, “ Mr Nicol adds. "In fact, The Ferry is one of our favourite venues and we particularly look forward to playing there again on Thursday evening. This year, the concert will be rather different – not only have we got the new material from  Festival Bell but this will be the first time we've invited our audiences to help us select the repertoire for a concert tour.”

As well as Simon Nicol on guitar and lead vocals, Fairport Convention features Dave Pegg on bass and backing vocals, Chris Leslie on fiddle, mandolin, bouzouki and lead vocals, Ric Sanders on violin and Gerry Conway on drums and percussion.

Fairport Convention has won a coveted BBC Lifetime Achievement Award and Radio 2 listeners voted Fairport's groundbreaking album Liege & Lief   'The Most Influential Folkrock Album of All Time'.

Footer: Fairport Convention's concert at The Ferry starts at 8pm. Tickets and booking information from 01698 360085 or online www.the-ferry.co.uk

Smoothiesforme goes north - young Edinburgh singer to appear at influential Scottish music festival

Smoothiesforme is a 17-year-old singer songwriter from Edinburgh who proves that doing things yourself can achieve big results. As a great example of how today's music industry has changed, she uses social media channels like YouTube, Twitter and Facebook to promote herself: writing, recording and producing all her own material too. She has now caught the attention of Scotland's influential goNORTH event, and has been invited to play alongside some of the biggest names in the Scottish music scene at a live music showcase in Inverness in June.

Edinburgh-born Holly first started to take her music seriously in 2009, inspired by a wide range of genres spanning acoustic rock to electronic-influenced beats. Choosing the name Smoothiesforme to represent her positive and upbeat approach to music and life, she began to release cover versions and original compositions on her YouTube channel.

Before long, her music was making people sit up and take notice. With a voice that is ‘both distinctive and mature' (Edinburgh Spotlight), she now has over 20,000 subscribers online who count themselves of fans of her ‘beautiful melancholic' music.

But it's not just online where Smoothiesforme is making an impact. In 2010, she made it to the finals of Forth One's One To Watch Award; then in 2011, she won the Burnsong Under 25 Singer / Songwriter competition. Now, the organisers of goNORTH - an important event in the Scottish music industry calendar - have invited Smoothiesforme to play at their live music showcase in June.

Of course, Smoothiesforme's popularity has a lot to do with her talent and the strength of her material. But her ability to use the online channels which are now at everyone's disposal has also been a significant contributory factor, showing just how effective they can be in the right hands.

And now, with her appearance at goNORTH likely to be seen by a host of industry and media professionals, this young and self-driven star from Edinburgh is bound to start shining even brighter.

The Big Stooshie is Scotland's Charity Music Festival.
This exciting three-day event will be the first date in the country's festival calendar, taking place from 4-6th May 2012. This year will see the very first “Big Stooshie Festival”.

Big Stooshie – Scotland's Charity Music Festival, is a new 3 day event taking place in May 2012 at The Howe Country Centre in Giffordtown, Fife.  The festival will feature over 50 live acts and aims to raise over £100,000 for Help for Heroes and SSAFA Forces Help.  The event is organised by a small enthusiastic team who are confident they will attract a capacity crowd of 12,000 people from all over Scotland.

The Big Stooshie has secured a very impressive line up of bands from a wide range of music styles, importantly appealing to a wide audience.  Among the acts confirmed so far are The Damned, The Hoosiers, from The Jam, The Beat, The Boomtown Rats, The Complete Stone Roses, Kazabian, The Dykeenies, Tommy Reilly, Root System and many more to be announced shortly, including a number of famous headliners!

In recognition of the efforts of the organising team and the potentially huge donation to the charities, Help for Heroes and SSAFA Forces Help are firmly supporting the project and both have recognised the event as potentially their largest single fundraising event in Scotland next year.
The organisers are delighted that Help for Heroes, “Britain's Most Admired Charity”*, have recently awarded the Big Stooshie the prestigious status of a "Red Letter Event", the only one of its kind currently listed for Scotland in 2012.  The charity awards their “Red Letter” status to a handful of the most ambitious fund raising projects.

More information about The Big Stooshie – Scotland's Charity Music Festival 2012 is available on www.facebook.com/TheBigStooshie and at www.bigstooshie.com.  www.bigstooshie.com.

Tickets are already available at a reduced ‘early bird' price that includes a 20% discount, but this promotion will be ending shortly. Tickets can be purchased at www.ticketcandy.com or from local outlets around Scotland listed on www.bigstooshie.com/

Kelburn Garden Party
Greetings to all, I have the pleasure of writing with the first line-up news for the tiny, eccentric, affordable, perfectly-formed festival that is the Kelburn Garden Party 2012.

The event was a huge success in 2011, cementing our place in the bustling pantheon of small Scottish festivals. We saw a capacity crowd basking in wall-to-wall sunshine while enjoying a delightful palette of music, art and performance from a whole range of genres, from underground uber-cool to good old fashioned fun, barely able to disguise their awe at the menu of delights spread before them. This year the team behind the festival are toiling hard to build on last year's triumph. We are still working on the line-up, but here is the first batch of names for your websites, blogs, listings, previews and music sections.

Inverurie Jazz Festival
The Garioch (pronounced Geery) Jazz Club is Scotland`s Oldest Jazz Club is about to put on Scotland`s Youngest Jazz Festival . We are based in Rural Aberdeenshire about 15 miles northwest of Aberdeen in the beautiful countryside, on the banks of the River Urie and the River Don. See www.inverurie4u.com

We got some advice from other Jazz Festivals before we went ahead and they said not to be too ambitious and keep it small to start with, so as you will see on the reverse of this letter, that we don't take advice very well, with over 12 Venues and more than 13 bands, entertainers.

The line up is the best of The North East of Scotland`s Jazz musicians plus world class talents such as Richard Michael, Quattro MacJazz, and Nova Scotia.

The support from the local businesses has been very good and a lot of the Hotels, Bars, Restaurants are providing great and food and drinks during the performances by a number of the bands.

The main Concert on the opening Friday Night will have a bar open during the performances so that your throat doesn't get dry when you sing along.

The grand finale on Sunday the 3 rd starts off with lunches at both The Strathburn Hotel and The Hopeville Social Club at 12 noon . At 2pm there will be a Jazz Parade with a childrens fancy dress parade down the main street culminating with Jazz Bands Playing in the Town Square till 5pm ish.

Please let all your employees and members of your Jazz Clubs know about this. It is the Jubilee Weekend so enjoy yourselves and come to Inverurie Jazz Festival.
