This week A Band Called Quinn launch a crowd-funding campaign to support performances of their critically acclaimed multimedia show Biding Time (remix) at this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The show received four star reviews from The Scotsman, The Herald, TV Bomb & Public Reviews when it premiered to a sold out audience at The Arches Theatre in Glasgow last autumn.

The band are now looking for support to perform the show at the award winning Summerhall venue this August.

The show tells the story of aspiring singer/ songwriter Thyme & her journey through the fame factory as she pursues success in the music industry. A lot of it is based on Louise Quinn's own experience of being signed to a major record label & the highs & lows that followed.

The band devised the show with Grid Iron Theatre's Ben Harrison. The show features A Band Called Quinn playing live, feature-film-quality visuals, a giant rabbit & the first ever use of silent disco technology in this context.

In return for supporting the project the band are offering various rewards including a chance to appear in a music video or play cowbell on a recording.

....A vital piece that's alternately comical and sinister but musically compelling throughout.'

The Scotsman ****

'...thought provoking, memorable & one-off stuff.'

Tom Paley Biography
Born and raised in New York City, Tom Paley fell in love, long ago, with traditional folk-music. He began playing guitar and 5-string banjo and was soon well-known for his instrumental skill. For a time, he performed in a duo with Woody Guthrie. Later, with Mike Seeger and John Cohen, he formed THE NEW LOST CITY RAMBLERS, the group that generated a great wave of interest in the traditional string band music of the rural South.

After the breakup of the original NLCR, he formed the short-lived OLD RELIABLE STRING BAND (together with Roy Berkeley and Artie Rose) and then moved to Sweden, residing there for three years (1963-65) before moving to England, where he has lived ever since, touring often in America, the UK, Scandinavia and other parts of Europe, both solo and with other musicians.

In England , he worked together, from about 1966, with Joe Locker and a series of fiddlers as the NEW DEAL STRING BAND. The NDSB was temporarily laid on the shelf in the late ?70s but has been revived in recent years with Tom's son, Ben, joining Tom and Joe as principal fiddler (though, in 1975, after many years on guitar and banjo, Tom took up fiddle, as well, so the NDSB now has two fiddlers).

At first, when Tom began playing fiddle, he played only the same sort of American Old-Time music that he'd been doing for years guitar and banjo but, eventually, he began trying some of the strange and beautiful fiddle-tunes he heard in Sweden . Banjo and guitar are still his main instruments and American Old-Time music still makes up the bulk of his performance material, but Swedish fiddle-music now ranks equally high in his affections; he plays it whenever he gets a chance. In Sweden , he's been awarded the coveted Zorn-medal (in bronze; not the highest award but not lightly given, especially to non-Swedes) for his Swedish fiddling. When he and Ben perform together, if it's appropriate, they like to present the beautiful Swedish 'twin-fiddle' tradition, along with their hard-driving American music.

Tom has been made (honorary) president of FOAOTMAD (Friends of American Old-Time Music and Dance), the organization formed in England a few years ago

THE PRESTIGIOUS SCOTTISH MUSIC & ARTS PRIZE RETURNS FOR ITS SECOND YEAR.
Following last year's successful inauguration of The Scottish Album of the Year [SAY] Award, the Scottish Music Industry Association [SMIA] is delighted to announce that the prestigious arts prize is returning for a second year. The SAY Award will celebrate, promote and reward the most outstanding albums - of any genre - released by Scottish artists in 2012.

The winner will be chosen from a shortlist of ten albums at an award ceremony held in Glasgow's Barrowland Ballroom on Thursday, 20th June.  The winning album will once again receive a first prize of £20,000 with the nine other shortlisted titles picking up £1,000 each.  All ten shortlisted albums will also receive an exclusive artwork created by the winner of this year's SAY Art Commission: a prize fund of £20,000 courtesy of Creative Scotland and contested by eight outstanding graduates from Scotland's four principal art schools.

Drawing upon the nominations of 100 individuals and organisations from across the arts and Scotland's music industry, the twenty highest scoring albums will form The SAY Award Longlist to be announced on Thursday 25 th  April.  This year's Nominators included journalists, bloggers, radio presenters and producers, promoters, retailers, venues, club DJs, festival organisers, academics and music fans from elsewhere in the arts.  Over 270 albums were considered eligible with more than 135 albums picking up at least one vote from a Nominator.

Following a four-week promotion when the public will have the chance to stream every one of the twenty longlisted titles, there will be a 24-hour voting window on Monday 27 th  May when the public can choose their favourite from the list.  The album with the most public votes will secure an automatic place on The SAY Award Shortlist of 10, with the other nine titles being chosen by an independent panel of judges.

Inaugural Edinburgh Guitar & Music Festival set for May 2013
Preparations underway for Scotland's new premier guitar event

Edinburgh, UK, 27th November 2012 – Preparations are now underway for the inaugural Edinburgh Guitar & Music Festival, the largest of its kind to be held in Scotland. The three-day festival takes place in Edinburgh's historic Corn Exchange from 25th-27th May 2013 and aims to attract participants and visitors from all over the world with an extensive programme of performances, seminars and competitions, as well as a trade exhibition.

Performances will embrace a variety of genres and styles, featuring an international line-up of artists that includes acoustic guitar virtuoso Peter Finger from Germany, Italian fingerstyle guitarist Daniele Bazzani, swing jazz guitarist Anth Purdy and Scotland's jazz virtuoso Nigel Clark with many more to follow.

In the Festival's seminar programme, visitors can learn skills, tips and tricks from leading performers and practitioners. With something for every guitarist, sessions include Guitar Looping (Haftoe Medboe), Rock 2 Jazz (Pete Sklaroff), Altered Tuning (Peter Finger), Slide Guitar (Tom Doughty), Becoming a Studio Guitarist and Getting the Right Sound (Hugh Burns), through to Surviving as a Rock Guitarist with tour veteran and writer Phil Hilborne. An additional programme of industry seminars will see guest speakers from the music and audio industries cover a range of business-related topics relevant to guitarists of all levels.

Aiming to support the next generation of guitarists, the Festival also features two schools' competitions, the EGMFestival Juniors Guitar Competition (for 11 to 14 year olds) and the EGMFestival Seniors Guitar Competition (for 15 to 18 year olds). Finalists will be selected from recorded entries and invited to perform live at a special event on Sunday 26th May. Three prizes will be awarded in each category, with supporting schools also eligible to win vouchers for equipment purchase. The senior competition is sponsored by Edinburgh-based festival partner Red Dog Music.

The Festival is also partnering with Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy (Scotland), helping to promote a series of fun activities around the festival period that raise awareness of the charity and its work. A trade exhibition will run throughout the festival supported by equipment manufacturers and distributors from Scotland and beyond.

Festival organisers report a positive start to preparations for the brand new event. “The Festival aims to provide a unique international stage for showcasing the work of both professional and amateur guitarists,” say Ged Brockie and Adam Dzierzek of Guitar & Music Festivals Ltd. “However, it's also very much a community event and we are delighted to be receiving support from local businesses, as well as the backing of leading figures such as Edinburgh's Lord Provost, as we embark on what will hopefully become an annual event in the international guitar calendar.”

RUNRIG TO CELEBRATE 40 YEARS OF ROCK
Celtic super-group Runrig have finally announced plans for their 40th Anniversary celebrations next summer. The main event will take the form of a weekend party at the Black Isle Showground, Muir of Ord, near Inverness.

The ‘Party on the Moor' festivities will be celebrated by a massive outdoor concert on Saturday August 10. Fans wanting to stay the weekend can also arrive on Friday August 9, with a ceilidh in the Grand Barn and the Black Isle Showground will become a campsite and concert venue for the weekend.

On Saturday August 10, the six-piece will perform to thousands of fans with camping also available for the Saturday night. Tickets for the event go on sale on Friday (November 16) at 9am.

One of the band's founding members Rory MacDonald, said it was important for the band to celebrate the significant milestone ‘at home'. He said:

“We are a Scottish band that is very proud of our Highlands and Islands roots. We wanted to share this significant milestone with our fans on home turf. They have shown fantastic support for us for an incredible four decades.

“This is an amazing anniversary to have reached. Little did we think as young lads back in 1973 that we would still be showcasing Gaelic, folk and rock music right into the new millennium and beyond.

“We want to thank our loyal fans who have been with us from the beginning with one of our biggest events, as well as hopefully welcoming a new generation of fans who are discovering our music.”

In recent years, Runrig has enjoyed phenomenal global success playing to tens of thousands of fans in countries such as Sweden, Germany, Denmark and Canada, as well as retaining a loyal fan base in Scotland and throughout the UK.

Two of the original members of the ‘Loch Lomond' hit makers are still in the band – bass guitarist and singer Rory MacDonald and his brother percussionist Calum MacDonald, along with Skye guitarist Malcolm Jones, who joined five years later. Drummer Iain Bayne, from St Andrews, joined in 1980 with lead vocalist Nova Scotian, Bruce Guthro joining in 1998 and keyboard player Brian Hurren from Falkirk joining in 2001.

The band has released over 20 albums and almost 30 singles with its Gaelic song ‘An Ubhal as Àirde' reaching number 18 in the UK charts in 1995 – the first Gaelic song to enter the UK top 20.

Lead vocalist Brian Guthro added:

“This is going to be a fantastic weekend and we look forward to celebrating 40 years of folk rock with our fans.”

The ticket prices start at £45 for the Saturday concert, or from £69 for those fans wishing to take advantage of the weekend package. There are also travel packages for fans travelling from Glasgow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Perth and other Scottish towns and cities. The campsite will be open from 12pm on Friday August 9 until 12pm on Sunday August 11.

BUSINESS LIMELIGHT AWARD FOR EDINBURGH FOLK CLUB

Edinburgh Folk Club has been chosen to receive Hands Up for Trad's “Business Limelight Award” for April 2013. The award is supported by Creative Scotland to recognise outstanding contributions made by businesses and organisations in helping to shape and influence the arts and cultural sector in Scotland today .

Edinburgh Folk Club is an organisation which exists to foster an interest in the wide international world of folk and related music. The club meets weekly (Wednesday evening) for most of the year in the Pleasance Cabaret Bar, Edinburgh, Scotland. Although a large proportion of our programme naturally features Scottish Traditional music in all its forms, we also include artists from much further afield along with other related genres.

The club was originally founded in September 1973 by John Barrow, Ian Green and Kenny Thompson who were already active within the Edinburgh Folk Scene. They recognised the need for a new weekly folk club in Edinburgh which would be accessible to all comers. The very first venue for the club was The Albert Chaplaincy Centre, 23-24 George Square, Edinburgh

Over the years, there have been several highlights including the founding of The Carrying Stream Festival which is an annual event to commemorate and celebrate the life of the late Hamish Henderson. There have also been various special concerts especially during Edinburgh International Festival and at other times with many significant International guests, including Tom Paxton, Julie Felix and Ramblin' Jack Elliott!

Edinburgh Folk Club has encouraged many young performers who have since become established favourites on the folk scene. It also hosts an annual song competition in early June which has now become an institution and has launched several classic songs by artists such as Karine Polwart, Jim Malcolm, Nancy Nicolson and many more.

The present committee intend to carry on in the same spirit as our predecessors and continue to feature a wide variety of folk and related music including both traditional and contemporary styles. They will, of course, remain conscious of changing trends, styles, and innovations while also welcoming advice or suggestions from members and loyal regulars.

The present organisers of Edinburgh Folk Club are delighted to receive this award especially during the year of the Club's 40 th anniversary. They will be celebrating 40 years of Edinburgh Folk Club on 9th October 2013, featuring Mike Whellans who was the first ever guest to appear at the Club. This award will surely be the icing on the birthday cake.
