IAN MILLAR & DOMINIC SPENCER - saxophone & piano jazz duo
“Jazz at Lunchtime” Edinburgh Fringe 2016

Have lunch, or just listen

80 Lauriston Place , Edinburgh , EH3 9DE

Every day 5th-29th August 12.30pm (doors open 11.30am ) £8

tickets available from, Fringe Box Office, or on door

Ian and Dominic have been playing together for a number of years playing melodic improvisations on jazz standards and original compositions.

They have had enormous success over many years during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where their successful fringe show ‘Jazz at Lunchtime' at the Radisson Blu Hotel on the Royal Mile has entertained thousands of people, with many sell-out shows. A number visitors to the Edinburgh Fringe from all over the world have returned year after year to see them play. This year they have a new venue, the Tap bar at the Novotel in Lauriston place.

Based in Edinburgh , the duo has regularly and extensively toured Scotland . They have embarked on many rural tours, often bringing jazz for the first time to remote communities, performing in intimate settings. The beautiful Scottish scenery that they have seen on their travels has inspired the writing of many pieces of music by Ian.

More recently they have extended their tours to jazz clubs, villages, small theatres, and arts venues. They have played in Northumberland, North & South Yorkshire, Cumbria, Bedfordshire and Shropshire making the occasional trip further south including a European trip to Brussels where they performed in the The Music Village Jazz Club .

Dominic says " We have been very successful at transforming venues into an intimate cabaret style jazz club setting with low lighting and candles on the tables. We now have very many fond memories of wonderful evenings around the country where the reception we have received and audience comments have been fantastic. "

Ian says “Our experience of playing in venues up and down the country has been amazing and the acoustics in most of the halls are superb. We have experienced a warm and friendly atmosphere where the audiences know each other, creating truly inspirational settings for some wonderful evenings."

Ian and Dominic have also performed in a number of Festivals including the Edinburgh Jazz Festival, Glasgow Jazz Festival, Fife Jazz Festival, Callander Jazz Festival, Borders Jazz Festival, Bath Fringe Festival and the Buxton Fringe Festival.

Their style of jazz concentrates on developing melodic ideas within the framework of the melody of a tune, whilst maintaining the concept and groove behind it. The result is a very accessible melodic style which allows them to explore, improvise and develop ideas without losing the essence of each piece of music, and to interact together in as creative a way as possible. See the Audience Comments , Press Reviews , Concert Diary , Photographs and more at:

“...he really used the vast range of the tenor, always with gentle lyricism"

“...really excellent Millar originals..."

"Beautiful soaring magic! I was blown away by your show, just breath-taking!"

"What a lovely and exhilarating performance! Enjoyed the interaction between the two of you, and the obvious love you have for what you do."

"...expect warm, intelligent, reflective, human music..."

"Ian Millar's own composition
Morning Dew opened the performance, its lovely sinuous melody ranging freely from the heights to the depths of the tenor sax voice."

"...a unique performance not only in its introduction of many new pieces but also in the splendidly relaxed jazz styling; music that had its own special flavour and was not a copy of anything else."

After another successful Jazz festival, Edinburgh is quieter for the moment but this weekend, the Fringe Festival gets underway and there will be plenty more great jazz concerts to be heard.
In particular, Scotland's National Jazz Orchestra led by Tommy Smith will play homage to Dave Brubeck in their concert
Brubeck: An Incredible Jazz Legacy  on Sunday 14th August at the Queen's Hall

What? A surreal musical walking tour of Greenock
When? May - August 2016

How Much? £7-£10

Residents of Greenock have been suprised to see a giant ukulele playing prawn & a power ballad singing selkie popping up in their home town recently.

These are a couple of characters from surreal musical walking tour Beyond The Green Oak which is happening in Greenock over the summer. Check out the trailer here:

Autumn 2016 Show Announcement

Following a packed schedule to date this year, the Edinburgh Blues Club is delighted to announce the following shows this autumn.
Further details on all these events and ticket links are available at our website

Some rather eccentric tour guides take to Greenock during the tourist season

Beyond the Green Oak – A surreal, musical walking tour .

Local residents and visitors to Greenock may think they are seeing things between May and August this year. That's because there will be some rather eccentric characters at large in the area. A ukulele playing prawn, a selkie who is obsessed with selfies and a beatboxing Burns are just some of the cast of Beyond the Green Oak - a surreal, musical walking tour of Greenock delivered by Beacon Arts Centre in partnership with Creative Scotland and Inverclyde Place Partnership.

The tours are led by tour guide Hector McMonigal who will introduce the sites & highlights of Greenock town centre. Along the way, audiences will meet the likes of self-styled diva Selkie Stick – half woman, half seal who loves to sing & take selfies (listen to her song Guiding Light here) a Beatboxing Burns will then tell you some stories with some impressive vocal percussion and Folk duo Green Oak get lyrical about the area, whilst R&B act Tape & Style & DJ Jim ‘Electro' Watt will introduce the riverside town through their sweet, soul sounds and banging beats. (Downloadable images on Flickr here ).

The tours are the brainchild of award-winning artist and musician Louise Quinn. She describes the inspiration behind the tours:

“A wee trip doon the watter' to Greenock always gives me a slightly surreal feeling of being on holiday, even though it's only half an hour away on the train! I wanted to recreate this feeling for visitors whilst letting the residents see their home town through fresh eyes. I hope this tour will give the participants a smile, a song & a fondness for all things Greenock. ”

Organisers hope to attract the many cruise ship passengers to join them on the tour, but also stress that the tour is open to all visitors to Greenock and local residents as Rikki Payne from Inverclyde Place Partnership confirms:

““With the numbers of cruise ships in Greenock almost doubling in the next couple of years, it's really important that we're able to offer visitors something that shows Inverclyde as a vibrant and creative place. But this tour isn't just for tourists. The songs in the show are brilliant, irreverent observations about local life and attitudes. I think local people will take them to heart and adopt these crazy characters into their lives.

“Beyond the Green Oak is colourful, fun and different. It is certainly not your usual run of the mill tour – I mean we have a man dressed as a prawn playing the ukulele! However we promise everyone involved will learn something about Greenock – although some facts may not necessarily be true!”

Beyond the Green Oak is part of a wider project – All Hands, a celebration of Inverclyde's rich local heritage and strong cultural traditions. In addition to the walking tours there will be workshops in watercolour painting and free music performances in the Beacon Bistro. Anyone interested in joining should contact Beacon Centre or call 01475 723 723

Get Lilygun's debut album on sale now!
This album has sold out in shops so this is the only place where Cds are available.

Visit the Shop here: shop
and get your copy while it's on sale now!

Here's what they said about it...

“There have been many debut albums that bring you that "wow" factor and Lilygun is right up there with the best. The songs are atmospheric, played brilliantly but above all sung to perfection by front woman Anna-Christina. Lilygun are getting the attention and recognition from the music industry for all their qualities and hard work. About bloody time too”.
Neil Richardson. Roomthirteen

"Escaping the genre trap with consummate ease, Lilygun's self-titled debut deals in freedom of expression and a feast of guitar-driven emotion dredged from the depths of London's underground live music scene. Impossible to pigeon-hole and yet easy to admire, Lilygun could be the shot in the arm British rock is searching for".
Gun-Ho. Rush On Rock

"What's most striking about the album from Lilygun is how they've combined a real sense of catchiness with their technical approach to things, combining their signature sound with an almost mainstream like quality, something which will stand them out as more than a simple rock band. This ability, and the resulting sound is what makes this such a stand out album, and one which I have a feeling is going to do remarkably well once it's in the public domain from the 10th of September. If you only ever listen to one album we review, then make it this one – believe me when I say it's worth your while!"
Dave Nicholls. Loud-Stuff

“Few bands in recent memory have grabbed my attention like London rockers Lilygun. There is so much depth to this record. It's dark and cerebral, it's moody and pensive, it's operatic and it rocks balls. Musically, there is an evident solid chemistry with gorgeous bass lines by Aaron John and David Ryder Prangley and drummer Belle Star laying down the foundation for massive orchestral highs and magnificently simple lows. Add to this a deliciously balanced mix of guitar sounds, ranging from haunting background growls to full bore wall-o'-sound solos. Then there is the tour-de-force that IS Anna-Christina. With song writing chops that, for me, rival those of the great Tori Amos, she is certain to be a force to be reckoned with. This is not to mention the fact that she is one of the most gorgeous bad-ass rocker women I've ever seen”.
Kevin. Nanobot Rock Reviews

“This is a set of songs written by the band's dynamic and charismatic singer, Anna-Christina, demonstrating such variety that it's difficult to pin the sound down to 1 genre. The arrangements squeeze every last drop out of a fairly traditional line-up and create a huge dynamic range across the album. This is a great first album from an original and inventive band and I haven't heard anything else this year to surpass this in terms of raw power and dynamic range; they've been on the horizon for a while now and this should be the breakthrough. This is a great album”.
Allan McKay. Music Riot

“Anna-Christina's voice is both unique and unexpected. The album only hints at the intensity this band could create live; it's a tease, a promise of better things, an album that will leave you on the hunt for tickets to see them play live. Lilygun know how to lead their listeners, drawing them intimately close before hitting them hard with a punk riff or two. Lilygun's debut album is an insight into just what they can do, varied and exciting, it clearly sets them up as one to watch.”
Keller. EGL Magazine

"This band is going places, no doubt about it and I strongly suggest that radio stations and festival organisers start checking them out now! The band deliver 8 tracks of Rock music that brims with attitude and melody."
Dave. Ravenheart Music
