Fat-Suit
Scottish fifteen-piece fusion collective Fat-Suit have announced their first European tour starting on August 20. The band, which formed last year and has been likened to American funksters Snarky Puppy, has made a big impression at Aberdeen and Edinburgh jazz festivals this year and recently caused much excitement at the more mainstream music event, the Wickerman Festival in the Scottish borders.

Comprising past and present music students from Glasgow, including Yahama Scholarship 2014 winner, pianist Ustav Lal, and finalists in both the Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year and the Young Scottish Traditional Musician of the year competitions, Fat-Suit is due to release its second album, the follow-up to last year's Kambr, later this summer.

Saxophonist Scott Murphy, who also features in the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra's feeder group, the Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra and who is one of Fat-Suit's main composers, said: “This European tour will be the first time we've actually played outside of Scotland and we're beyond excited at the prospect of taking our music to other countries and new audiences.”

The tour opens at CC Muziekcafe, Amsterdam before heading to the Czech Republic, where dates include The Remarkable Festival in Loket on August 23, then Poland and Ukraine, finishing off at Budapest Jazz Club on September 1.

The Glasgow Rhythm and Blues Collective Presents
Doug Macleod Live at Blackfriars

2nd September
Tickets £7 from Ticket Scotland.

Doug MacLeod, the perennial Blues Music Award Nominee, is a singer-songwriter in the American tradition. He is a traveling artist that writes and sings original songs that are based on his own life and experiences. He learned from the old masters, lived the music, survived the life and carries forward a valuable tradition. MacLeod is known for his superb songwriting, guitar wizardry, warm soulful vocals, wit and unforgettable live performances. At the heart of this is his knack for storytelling, bringing characters-from the faceless to the legendary-to strikingly real life.

As a youth he overcame abuse and a crippling stutter by turning to music. After he picked up a guitar, and tried to sing - he found his voice.

While he developed his rich, soulful singing style MacLeod also worked out a unique, unorthodox and powerfully rhythmic acoustic guitar style. The rage of his turbulent youth was eventually channeled through his guitar, using his relentless right hand to pound out an insistent, churning beat to complement his intricate bottleneck and finger-style technique.

MacLeod's playing landed him sideman gigs with George 'Harmonica' Smith, Big Joe Turner, Pee Wee Crayton, Eddie 'Cleanhead' Vinson, Lowell Fulson and Big Mama Thornton. Under their tutelage, he learned how to thrill and enrapture a crowd.

Over 29 years, 19 studio albums, several live records, compilations, a blues guitar instructional DVD and a live performance DVD, MacLeod has consistently earned raves. His songs have been covered by many artists including Albert King, Albert Collins, Joe Louis Walker and Eva Cassidy. He has co-written songs with Dave Alvin and Coco Montoya.

MacLeod's songs have been featured in many TV movies and the hit show In the Heat of the Night. Two of his songs are on Grammy nominated albums by Albert King and Albert Collins.

From 1999 to 2004 he hosted Nothin' But The Blues, a very popular weekend blues show on Los Angeles ' KLON-KKJZ. He has also been the voice for The Blues Showcase on Continental Airlines and contributed his soulful slide guitar playing to the Los Angeles opening of the August Wilson play "Gem of the Ocean". For ten years he penned "Doug's Back Porch," a regular feature column in Blues Revue Magazine in which he shared his humorous and insightful stories with thousands of readers. He won the Golden Note Award in 1997 for his AudioQuest album "You Can't Take My Blues". In 2006 Solid Air/Warner Bros. released Doug's guitar instructional DVD "101* Blues Guitar Essentials".

MacLeod signed with Reference Recordings in 2012. His new album "There's A Time" was released in March of 2013. In every note he performs and records, MacLeod subscribes to the rule-of-thumb learned from country bluesman Ernest Banks from Toano VA. who instilled in him to "Never play a note you don't believe", and "Never write or sing about what you don't know about."

Like the old masters who taught him, MacLeod's music expresses life and times via an intangible, elusive quality that may simply be a keen sense of what matters most. There is a philosophic and healing side to MacLeod's music and his stories that has helped others overcome the hardships of their lives.

As Pee Wee Crayton's widow Esther once told Doug, "You have a message and you'll send that message mainly to the people who don't go to church." Amen.

The Tartan Heart Fringe was initially conceived to by Medicine Music's Rob Ellen? when booking and promoting the first Belladrum Festival with 4 main aims.

1. to help engage the Highland Music Community in the concept of Belladrum Festival

2. to  bring the spirit of Belladrum in a very tangible and audible way into the heart of Highland & Island communities

3. to help convince artists to come to a fledgling Belladrum Festival by offering a few more shows

4. and yes in very commercial terms, to sell more tickets for the main event.

These days now that Belladrum sells out to capacity earlier and earlier each year, the later 2 are less important, but Rob Ellen argues the first 2 are still as relevant as ever, even more so in fact.

"I have less and less to do with the Tartan Heart Fringe these days, it's truly become an organic event, fuelled by the music, the musicians, and the people who love their music all over the highlands all year round, which is just great for this Pilgrim. These days I concentrate on booking The Square Wheels Potting Shed Stage , which was conceived in 2008 as the focus of the spirit of the Fringe at Belladrum its self. Now many of the artists coming to play our stage and others across Belladrum like to extend their stay and take the High Road for a Highland Adventure. All I do now is introduce them to the people who can help,  and I help them all promote their shows, while  at the same time I get a chance to  up my own game around the venues we love to visit with The Medicine Show Radio Revue all year round, with the belladrum influx and on the Belladrum buzz. This year we have tea room, gala day, house concert, village hall, art centre, and a mouth watering array of famous hostelry venues, from Jura to Orkney hosting an equally mouth watering selection of music from profile artists from Thailand to Texas and featuring the best of Highland talent along the way”.

Featured Fringe tour this year Robbie Fulks and The Mekons, all artists are available for session and interview prior to and on the day of these shows and at Belladrum.

Ollie Howell quintet
The drummer who floored “Q” brings his exciting young band to Scotland

London-based drummer Ollie Howell, who leads his acclaimed quintet on its first tour of Scotland in September, has some high profile admirers.

Howell “floored” Quincy Jones, the legendary film soundtrack composer and record producer who worked with Frank Sinatra and oversaw Michael Jackson's multi-million-selling album Thriller, during a performance staged to feature some of the best students at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff in 2009. This led to Jones, who is affectionately known in the music business as Q, mentoring the Wallingford-born Howell and monitoring his progress as he has moved into a full-time professional career.

Howell has also been taken under the wing of the legendary former Miles Davis drummer Jimmy Cobb, who featured on Davis's classic Kind of Blue album, and is the first musical recipient of a Sky award, having won a Sky Academy Arts Scholarship earlier this year. A television documentary will be screened on the Sky Arts channel during 2015 as a result.

His quintet, which features tenor saxophonist Duncan Eagles, trumpeter Mark Perry, pianist Matt Robinson and bassist Max Luthert, appears at Carnegie Hall, Dunfermline on September 17, and continues on to the Blue Lamp, Aberdeen (18), Eden Court, Inverness (19), Lyth Arts Centre, near Wick (20), and Edinburgh Jazz Bar (21).
