Top musicians band together for Haitians

Published Date:  04 February 2010 By GARETH EDWARDS A FUNDRAISING concert set up by bands in the Capital is hoping to raise more than £10,000 to help victims of the Haiti earthquake.
The benefit concert at the Queen's Hall will feature some of the best-known local musicians.

• How you can help: Donate via the mercy corps website at www.mercycorps.org.uk/haiti  or by calling 0845 245 0686 between 8am and 8pm. ADVERTISEMENT

All proceeds from the event will go towards the Evening News-backed campaign, launched by local charity Mercy Corps and the city council, which is helping provide vital aid to the millions caught up in the devastating earthquake.

Other charity nights are also being organised to help the campaign, which has already raised more than £200,000.

The concert has been set up by local singer and music promoter Liz MacEwan, who said she was originally planning a smaller event but had been overwhelmed by the amount of people looking to take part and support it. The singer, who enjoyed sell-out success in the Capital with her Tribute to Peggy Lee show, said: "When I saw the footage of the disaster on TV, I immediately wanted to help and I thought of organising a fundraising event at one of the local clubs I play.

"After a couple of days, it became pretty clear that there were so many people wanting to go, and so many friends wanting to take part, that we needed a bigger venue.

"I got in touch with Mercy Corps and they put us in touch with the Queen's Hall, and they said they would be happy to let us use the venue.

"We hope the event will be a sell-out and we are still looking for a few sponsors to get involved and help make the night a huge success."

Performing alongside Liz and the Blind Lemons will be another well-known local musician, Tam White, a Scottish blues legend who also gained huge recognition from his appearance in Braveheart.

Other local groups taking part include Nobby Clark, of Bay City Rollers fame, as well as Safehouse, Soulussion, The Rattlers featuring Davy Sloane, and Senegalese band SambaSene & Diwan.

Queen's Hall chief executive Adrian Harris said: "We have been carrying out collections for Mercy Corps after performances, so when they got in touch we were happy to help out.

"I'm sure it will be a great success, as audiences have seemed very keen to support the appeal and there are some top musicians playing."

John Cunningham, director of fundraising at Mercy Corps, said: "This event promises to be a fantastic evening for a great cause. It's wonderful to see Edinburgh's music community come together like this."

The Edinburgh Bands Together for Haiti concert is being held on 7 March, at 6:30pm, and tickets are on sale now.

Blind Lemon

Just about the most snow I've ever seen in East Lothian and can we find anywhere that sells sledges? Not likely… Garbage hasn't been collected in 18 days and the entire country has run out of grit for the roads… sheesh!

Anyway, here's an update on the Blind Lemon gigs

Thursday 21 January 2010 , Black Bull, Grassmarket, Edinburgh from 2200-0030

Saturday 30 January 2010 , Cuiken Inn, Penicuik from 2000-2300

Saturday 13 February 2010 , Roslin Glen Hotel , Roslin, 2130-0045… This is a NEW venue for us and we'll be playing in the function room…. It's £5.00 a ticket – come on, are we NOT worth it?

A recent press release on Blind Lemon:

“Rocking 60's and 70's classics from the Golden Era delivered with passion, power, and maximum R & B. These guys are great and actually play their OWN instruments, unlike the talentless monkeys that I churn out year on year so that gullible idiots can make me richer”

(Simon Cowell yesterday in the Daily Mail)

guys,

I seem to have been targeted in a similar scam to those on this page:    http://www.gigguide.co.uk/caution.htm   please make people aware.
unfortunately I fell for the first mail , it was full of dodgy/elaborate grammar but thought maybe he was a middle aged french-canadian trying to write English. I didn't fall for the second email though. Unfortunately I told him when I was on holiday in Jan / when I was back to continue lessons. I also gave my mobile number...but they are probably in Russia or Ghana and won't rob my flat while I am away...fingers crossed...someone will be here anyway =)

Regards,
Dave Holmes

Robertson and Reid. Plus Gordon! Sign Up For Seven Week Festive Run At Edinburgh's Royal Oak

Singer Ian Robertson and poet A A Reid start a seven week Tuesday night run downstairs at The Royal Oak, Edinburgh this Tuesday at 8pm. The run finishes on Tuesday December 29th after which the duo plan to take stock.

Says Reid: "Tuesday' s show will find Robertson and Reid in sombre mood as the focus groups following our preview gig at The Oak on October 14th were not great.

"However, having discovered Gordon stacking shelves at Sainsbury, Ian and I feel that we may now be turning a corner in the business that is show; the only way is up for Robertson and Reid. Plus Gordon!"

Reid added that while the duo won't be charging anyone to get in to their two and a half hour set (with interval)...getting out may be another matter entirely. Special guest this Tuesday are Sam Cassels, Mark Harding and 'Crumbling Jack'.

Oswald Set To Release
‘Flying To The Ground'

Out 8 th February 2010

Scottish indie pop band, Oswald gear up to release 2 nd single

Following in the footsteps of Franz Ferdinand, The Fratellis and Biffy Clyro, Oswald are the latest band set to break out of the Scottish music scene. The band, who are signed to R&R Music will be releasing the next single that has been selected by fans on the official Oswald website for release in the new year.

‘Flying To The Ground' was written by lead singer Tom about his friend Sam who tragically died in suspicious circumstances earlier this year.

Lead singer Tom explains the lyrics behind the song,

“Sam was a guy who had a full sex change - she was 23 when I met her at one of our gigs through a friend. A little while after we met she went out one Saturday night in Edinburgh . I got a phone call early the next morning to say that Sam had beenkilled - she had apparently fallen from a 4 storey building and landed in an alleyway where she died.”

Penning the song that day, the track was originally written to be dark and angry but includes some dance elements that reflects Sam's ‘full of life' attitude.

“She was a total clubber and the life and soul of a party, she knew how to live and always wore glitzy clothes and was an incredible person. I was trying to get across her struggle for acceptance within herself and happiness but also the lack of acceptance from people around her about what and who she was. Everybody has the right to be who they are.”

Oswald empower their fans to directly vote for the band's singles. They post demoson their website ( www.oswaldtheband.com ), the fans vote for the favourites and Oswald head to the studio to give them exactly what they want. To further include the fans participation in the Oswald releases they have been invited to re-mix “Flying To The Ground” in a competition with the winning entry being included in the commercial release package.

‘Flying To The Ground' will be available to download digitally from all major digital outlets as well as through www.oswaldtheband.com and R & R Music on 8 th February 2010 .

With the fans in charge, expect the unexpected.

“Far from being a lightweight pop act, the band's songs have a strength anddepth to them that gives them an added dimension to their overall sound.” – Daily Record
